Larry Kaplan <\/span>is primarily a grants advisor — strategizing, messaging, researching, seeking and writing grant proposals (government, corporate and private foundations).\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/strong>He also provides fundraising strategy and program design, strategic planning and staff development, board development and recruiting, marketing and communications, public policy analysis and advocacy<\/span><\/span> for community-based social justice nonprofits, collaboratives and philanthropists, primarily in Southern California.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

As a trained journalist, he brings strong messaging, persuasion, writing and editing skills to the table. As an experienced fundraiser, he brings a thorough knowledge of how philanthropy works. As an experienced executive, he understands the challenges nonprofits face every day. And as a long-time Californian, he is knowledgeable about our communities and people.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He has turned around troubled non-profit organizations and started up new ones.\u00a0 He has built and maintained elected officials’ offices, managed political campaigns, and has a solid understanding of the impacts of public policy. <\/strong><\/p>\n

He is a problem solver, a “fixer,” and is passionate about urban communities and social justice.\u00a0 He is a strong writer and editor, with solid marketing communications skills.\u00a0 He also offers freelance writing and interim executive director services.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2018, Larry was the managing director of Fairwarning<\/em>, a nonprofit investigative news organization, where he was responsible for all of the non-editorial functions of the website, primarily fundraising, marketing and administration.<\/p>\n

As the Los Angeles Area Director for the Trust for Public Land<\/u>, a national land conservation organization, Larry managed its urban park program, and was instrumental in developing a new paradigm for urban parks and playgrounds in low-income communities.\u00a0 He was executive director of Workplace Hollywood<\/u>, a non-profit dedicated to increasing the workforce diversity of Los Angeles’ signature industry.<\/p>\n

Larry was the CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce<\/u>, and helped a national civil engineering firm<\/u> market its services to both public and private sector clients.\u00a0 His career includes serving as Regional Director for U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer<\/u>, covering the state from the Tehachapi\u2019s to the Mexican border, during her first term. And, he served a number of state and local elected officials, including L.A. Councilman Mike Woo<\/u> in his first term.<\/p>\n

Larry, a long-time Angeleno, began his career in journalism, and is a graduate of the University of Southern California\u2019s Annenberg School of Journalism.\u00a0 He regularly contributed to the Nonprofit Quarterly <\/em>over the past few years, and currently volunteers with Taproot and Catchafire, providing guidance, coaching and counsel to various non-profit organizations.<\/p>\n

Larry served on the California Board of Accountancy from 2011 to 2017, and on the Los Angeles County Local Governmental Services and Economy and Efficiency Commissions from 2013 to 2023. In 2017, he was appointed by the Speaker of the Assembly to the Bar Examiners Committee of the California State Bar.\u00a0 He also serves on the board of Worksite Wellness Los Angeles.<\/p>\n
